An important midweek of Premier League action kicks off on Tuesday Febuary 26 and Paul Merson gives his verdict on the 10 games.
Merse predicted wins for Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, but can see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United slipping up in the capital at Crystal Palace on Wednesday night following their injury woes.
Cardiff vs Everton( (Tuesday, 7.45pm)
He said, Big game for Cardiff. You looked at the two home games against Watford and Everton, and perhaps thought that if they win both they’ve got a chance, then they get rinsed 5-1 by Watford.
This is a still a big football match, but I think that defeat has knocked Cardiff sideways and to bounce back from that would take some doing.
I think Cardiff will have a big eye on Southampton’s game against Fulham, because if Southampton don’t win, they’re in major trouble again.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2 For Everton
Huddersfield vs Wolves (Tuesday, 7.45pm)
I know Huddersfield had a player sent off against Newcastle, but they were ripped to shreds. I can see Wolves winning this quite comfortably, as long as they’re up for it.
Wolves could finish seventh or eighth, which would be a huge achievement for them coming from the Championship.
Hope for Huddersfield? Not a chance. What they have to do to stay up… if Liverpool matched that, they’d win the league. No chance.
PAUL PREDICTS: 0-2 For Wolves
Leicester vs Brighton (Tuesday, 7.45pm)
You talk about teams getting dragged into it, Brighton are one of those on a glass mountain with a pair of moccasin slippers on. They’re sliding quick.
I’m going for Leicester, I think we’ll see a reaction from them. I don’t think they were keen on the manager, from a distance it looked that way.
I thought it was only a matter of time for Claude Puel. If you lose that many home games on the trot, surely it’s only a matter of time.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1 For Leicester
Newcastle vs Burnley (Tuesday, 8pm)
Burnley have picked up, and Newcastle looked really lively against Huddersfield. I’m going to tip Newcastle to steal it; Longstaff looked decent and the front three look energetic.
When you often see Rafa Benitez’s side set up, they’re out to not lose before they win, but now he has these three up front – Rondon, Perez and Almiron – he has players who can make things happen. Those three are definitely as good as anyone in the bottom half. He can relax now, they’re a bit more open and entertaining.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1 For Newcastle
Arsenal vs Bournemouth (Wednesday, 7.45pm)
Arsenal are flat-track bullies, aren’t they? They finish these teams off. With Bournemouth’s injuries, I can only see an Arsenal win. This would be another great result in the top-four race.
One point ahead of United, I’m still not sure I see Arsenal getting Champions League. They’ve got a bad result in them. They will be caught up in the end.
PAUL PREDICTS: 3-1 For Arsenal
Southampton vs Fulham (Wednesday, 7.45pm)
This is a cup final, the biggest game of the midweek. Fulham are virtually down, I don’t give them much chance, but with Saints’ games coming up if they don’t win this they’re in major trouble.
Southampton simply have to win, and I’m going for a very, very nervy football match.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-0 For Southampton
Chelsea vs Tottenham (Wednesday, 8pm)
Well, the pressure is off Tottenham now so they’ll be like the Harlem Globetrotters again. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about them, where they get into a position to make things happen, and it doesn’t happen!
This is not a fluke, this is quite worrying now if you’re a Tottenham fan. At half-time against Wolves in December, if you’re a Spurs fan you’re thinking: ‘We are right in this title race.’ 1-0 at half-time and cruising. They then get well beat.
People were telling me: ‘They’re tired, they’re jaded,’ but they were 3-0 up against Cardiff in 26 minutes three days later. They then claw themselves back into the title race, go to Burnley knowing a win puts real pressure on, and they never look like winning it.
I’ll go for a draw, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Tottenham won it after Chelsea’s hard work on Sunday.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-2 Draw game
Crystal Palace vs Manchester United (Wednesday, 8pm)
United have got a lot of injures, Palace had a great result at Leicester… I’m going for Palace in this one! All of a sudden, I think United will be four points behind the top four.
I want to go for United, but they’ve got too many injuries to too many key players. They’ve come at the wrong time for United.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1 For Palace
Liverpool vs Watford (Wednesday, 8pm)
Watford are 12/1 to win this football match, which is ridiculous. Ridiculous.
This is a dangerous game for Liverpool; the pressure is on, and they have to win. Watford have just come off a 5-1 win, Liverpool have just come out of a hard week and Roberto Firmino is injured.
I’m tipping Liverpool to win it, just, but I would not be shocked one iota if Watford got something from this game. I can’t explain what an unbelievable banana skin this is.
If Watford had been beaten by Cardiff, this would be a walk in the park for Liverpool, but all of a sudden Watford are turning up there and thinking they’ve got nothing to lose. They’ll have a go.
PAUL PREDICTS: 2-1 For Liverpool
Manchester City vs West Ham (Wednesday, 8pm)
If you can drag a game on for as long as possible, Manchester City are not the same team. When they get 1-0 and 2-0 up in the first 15, 20 minutes, you might as well go home. They all want the ball.
But as it drags on, they get a bit nervous, not many want the ball and it gets a bit iffy. But I can’t see West Ham stopping them from scoring in the first half.
PAUL PREDICTS: 3-0 For Manchester City
